Longer slur in AI & GE2 (→GE3)

Shorter slur in FE (→GE1,EE)

..

The revision of GE2 (→GE3) was probably an attempt at standardising the inconsistent notation of FE, in which throughout the entire Mazurka slurs generally reach the 1st beat of even bars (as in bars 1-2). The AI slurring, which is more consistent in this respect, confirms that some deviations from the most frequent slurs are accidental inaccuracies, as is the case, e.g. with the discussed bars. Due to the above, in the main text we provide here a longer slur.

b. 3-13

composition: Op. 63 No. 1, Mazurka in B major

..

In the main text we add cautionary naturals to e1 at the beginning of bars 3 and 5 and to e2 at the beginning of bars 11 and 13. The first pair of accidentals was also added in GE2 (→GE3), the second – in EEW and GE3.

b. 5-6

composition: Op. 63 No. 1, Mazurka in B major

Longer slur in AI & FE (contextual interpretation→GE,EE)

Shorter slur in FE (literal reading)

..

The fact that the slur is not continued in a new line in FE is most probably an oversight by the engraver, and it was interpreted as such in the remaining editions. A longer slur is also present in AI, which allows us to recognise this version as the only one intended by Chopin.

 over f in AI & GE3

 under d1 in FE (→EE,GE1GE2)

..

In FE the mordent was placed under the d1-f1 third, which suggests that it concerns the bottom note, d1. It must be a mistake – cf. the text of AI and bars 13 and 73 – caused by a tendency to place marks, e.g. accents, staccato dots, slurs or certain ornaments ( and ) on the side of noteheads. In the case of ornaments and slurs, it can change their meaning, thus leading to a mistake, as is the case here (see also, e.g. the Polonaise in F minor, Op. 44, bar 10).
There is a similar situation in bars 7, 71 and 75.
